Russian conductor, born in Leningrad, 1935.
In 1953 he graduated from the Glinka Choir School at the The Leningrad Glinka State Academic Choir, in 1958 from the Leningrad Conservatory.
In 1968-1969 he trained at the Vienna Academy of Music and Performing Arts with Hans Swarowsky (conducting), in 1970-1971 - at the Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra with Evgeny Mravinsky.
Since 1960 - in the Symphony Orchestra of the Karelian Radio and Television (now the Symphony Orchestra of the Karelian State Philharmonic), in 1962-1971 - its chief conductor. Since 1971 he has been a conductor at the Leningrad Maly Opera and Ballet Theater = Оркестр Ленинградского Государственного Академического Малого Театра Оперы И Балета (now the Mikhailovsky Theatre).
From 1977 to 2018 - Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of the Leningrad Academic Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra.
Since 2018 - Laureate Conductor of the Academic Symphony Orchestra of the St. Petersburg Philharmonic.
From 1990-1998 he led the Stavanger City Symphony Orchestra in Norway.
Since 1971 he has been teaching conducting at the Leningrad Conservatory (professor), among his students are Vladimir Altshuler, André Anichanov, A. Steinluht = Аркадий Штейнлухт, Andrey Boreyko.
