Black Elk (Heȟáka Sápa) (c. December 1863 – August 17th or 19th 1950), was an Oglala Sioux medicine man. As a young man he was present at the 1876 Battle of the Little Big Horn and the 1890 Wounded Knee Massacre. There are several books about his life including 'Black Elk Speaks: being the life story of a holy man of the Oglala Sioux ' as told to John G. Neihardt.
