Cuban pianist, composer and orchestra director.
Born: Cienfuegos, Cuba 11 February 1893 Died: La Habana, Cuba 20 January 1943.
Brother of musician and orchestra leader Don Mario Antobal. Father of singer Raúl Azpiazu.
He was a leading Cuban orchestral director in the 1920s and 1930s. His band introduced authentic Cuban dance music and Cuban musical instruments to the USA, including on Broadway. They introduced such songs as “The Peanut Vendor,” “Mama Inez,” and “Green Eyes.”
His band (Don Azpiazu & His Havana Casino Orchestra) hit #1 in the U.S. with "The Peanut Vendor" in 1930. It sold over one million copies, and was awarded a gold disc by the RIAA. It was written by fellow Cuban Moises Simons and sung by fellow Cuban Antonio Machín.
