She started her career with local orchestras of Kenny Pirmann and Hal Weise in her hometown of Moline, Illinois. During the big band era, using the name Doris Donovan, she performed with the orchestras of Benny Strong, Jan Garber, Harry Cool and Don Shoup (Don Reid).
