She was a secretary for a New York City book publisher when she wrote her first song in 1939. She was a producer and writer of both books and material for night club acts. She also wrote poems that were published and a playwright.
She and singer Mary Small formed a management firm for femme vocalists in New York in 1961. The company's goals were for the coaching, staging and personal management of female vocalists. Address: 232 E. 49th St.
Married Irving (Budd) Getschal in 1948, former advertising executive with Paramount and Warner Bros, and then vice-president and partner in Stuart Bart, Inc., ad agency. She wrote at least 11 songs that Pearl Bailey recorded.
She was known for her quick one-liners in songs and poems such as "and better girls than I have lied" or "Men can't be amorous--With girls who are yammorous" or "And brother as a bad girl--I'm gonna be good" or "(of course I love you darling, but the boss was passing by.)"
