After working for the Columbia and Folkways labels, he set up a record store in New York in 1954. Three years later he joined Kapp Records, working in A&R and promotion as assistant sales manager.
Founded the record company Mira Productions, Inc. as well as the labels Mira Records, Mirco, Mirwood, and Surrey Records. Founded the publishing companies Mirwood Music (BMI), Miraka Music (ASCAP), and Arima Music (SESAC).
In 1966, following the bankruptcy of Vee Jay Records, Wood and Betty Chiapetta (the Vee-Jay comptroller) founded Modern Distributors to buy the assets of the label.
