    American operatic mezzo-soprano singer and actress. Born 11 June 1913 in New York City, New York, USA. Died 20 March 2013 in New York City, New York, USA. Risë (pronounced REE-za) Stevens sang for the Metropolitan Opera in New York City, beginning on a Met tour in Philadelphia in 1938. She performed with the Met for more than two decades, until 1961. One of her most celebrated roles was the title character in the opera "Carmen," which she sang for 124 performances. From 1963 to 1968, she served as director of the Metropolitan Opera National Company.
