David Lasley, his sister Julie and a friend, Joan Hughes, started an acappella trio called the Utopias in Detroit, USA, crafting an R&B/blue-eyed soul sound. David recorded their efforts, took the tapes to several record companies in nearby Detroit, and successfully arranged the release of three 45s, the first of which, "Welcome, Baby, To My Heart," became a regional hit when it debuted.
