The orchestra was inaugurated in 1947 under the auspices of the regional broadcaster Nordwestdeutscher Rundfunk (NWDR). Later named Kölner Rundfunk-Sinfonie-Orchester and from the 1990s as "WDR Sinfonieorchester Köln".
Not to be confused with WDR Funkhausorchester.
