2 Out Of 3 Rule was the brainchild of Paul Johnstone (later of Elbow Sisters). Paul was a prolific songwriter from the south of England whose music showed British indie-rock sensibilities, and whose songs and lyrics were imbued with a playful yet melancholy intent. Paul founded the band in the early 2000s, playing occasional gigs around the UK accompanied by Claire Diamond - whose voice lent itself perfectly to Paul's shimmering, jangly guitar melodies - and Robin Elliott on bass guitar. Matthew Woodward - of current Leeds bands Azores and Galaxians - joined them on drums for recording sessions in 2008. The band eventually recorded the album 'Really Elementary' in Leeds in 2008, before disbanding the same year.
