AIR are a French electronic duo formed in Versailles in 1995 by Nicolas Godin and Jean-Benoît Dunckel. One of the most distinctive and influential acts in ambient, space-age pop, and cinematic Electronica, they brought a cool, sophisticated European sensibility to instrumental and vocal electronic music that drew on 1960s exotica, 1970s progressive rock, and analogue synthesis to produce work of extraordinary atmospheric depth and melodic beauty. Having released early singles and an EP on Source Records, their debut album *Moon Safari* (1998) was an immediate critical sensation and unlikely commercial success — a serenely beautiful collection of analogue synthesiser textures, vocoder-treated vocals, lush arrangements, and tunes of simple, aching loveliness. 'Sexy Boy,' 'All I Need,' and 'Kelly Watch the Stars' were its most immediately appealing moments, but the album's consistent atmosphere of dreamy, slightly melancholic pleasure made it a defining document of late-1990s chill-out culture. It reached the top five in the UK and France and has sold over 2.5 million copies. *The Virgin Suicides* (1999), a film score for Sofia Coppola's debut feature, extended their palette into more languid, emotionally ambiguous territory, and *10,000 Hz Legend* (2001) was their most experimental departure — denser, more distorted, and deliberately less accessible than its predecessor. *Talkie Walkie* (2004) was widely regarded as a return to form, recapturing the melodic warmth of *Moon Safari* with more sophisticated production. *Pocket Symphony* (2006), *Love 2* (2009), and *Surfing on a Rocket* and subsequent releases continued their activity, while Godin and Dunckel also pursued solo projects. Their influence on downtempo, trip-hop, and the broader landscape of atmospheric electronic music has been substantial, and *Moon Safari* remains one of the most beloved European albums of its era.
