About

Amy Winehouse was a vocalist and songwriter born in 1983 in Southgate, London, and one of the most gifted musical talents Britain produced in her generation. Combining a deep, humid contralto voice with a sensibility rooted equally in classic American soul, jazz, and R&B, and a lyrical directness about love, addiction, and self-destruction, she created a small but extraordinary body of work before her death from alcohol poisoning in July 2011 at the age of 27. Having studied at the Sylvia Young Theatre School and drawn early comparisons to Sarah Vaughan and Billie Holiday, she released debut album *Frank* (2003) — a jazz-inflected neo-soul record produced with Salaam Remi — to considerable UK critical acclaim. Its wit, attitude, and vocal authority made clear she was something exceptional, though mainstream breakthrough was still to come. *Back To Black* (2006), co-produced by Salaam Remi and Mark Ronson, was one of the most important albums of the 2000s. Inspired by the girl-group sounds of the Brill Building era, Phil Spector's Wall of Sound, and classic Motown, it was simultaneously retro and utterly contemporary, with lyrics that addressed infidelity, substance abuse, and heartbreak with devastating candour. 'Rehab,' 'You Know I'm No Good,' 'Tears Dry on Their Own,' and the title track are among the most indelible songs of the century so far. The album won five Grammy Awards in 2008 — a record for a British artist at the time — and sold over 20 million copies worldwide. Yet Winehouse's public struggles with addiction and the relentless tabloid coverage of her personal life overshadowed her music in her final years, and her live performances became erratic and painful to witness. Her influence on subsequent generations of female vocalists — Adele, Duffy, Jessie J, and countless others — is immeasurable, and her talent remains an object of mourning among those who heard what she could do.
