About

Anna McGarrigle is a Canadian folk musician and singer/songwriter born December 4, 1944 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Anna is mostly known as one half of duo Kate & Anna McGarrigle with sister Kate McGarrigle. In the 1960s, Anna McGarrigle was in the Montreal folk group Mountain City Four (MC4). During the first half of the 1970s she experienced some success as a songwriter and in 1974, her song "Heart Like A Wheel" became the title track for Linda Ronstadt's breakthrough album. The following year, she released her first album with little sister Kate for Warner Bros. As a duo, the sisters went on to record another ten albums over the next thirty years.

Though officially retired following her sisters death in 2010, Anna has continued to perform with friends and relatives, as well as running her own label Querbeservice. The label has been used by Anna to privately reissue some of the sisters albums.

In 1994, Anna was made a member of the order of Canada, and she received the Governor's General Award in 2004. In 2010 she received the MOJO Roots Award along with her sister and in 2017 she was made part of the Quebec order of arts and letters (Ordre des arts et des lettres du Québec).

Together with husband Dane Lanken, she has two children: Sylvan Lanken and Lily Lanken. She is also the aunt of muscians Rufus Wainwright and Martha Wainwright, and has a second sister, singer songwriter Jane McGarrigle.
