About

Averell Ball was an artistic alias adopted by Belgian cartoonist, comedian, and musician Fred Jannin (b. 1956) for his appearances with New Wave/synthpop/post-punk novelty band The Bowling Balls. Initially devised in 1976 as a purely fictional "favorite group" of the main protagonists in Germain et nous… comic strip co-authored by Jannin with Thierry Culliford and published in Spirou magazine, the Bowling Balls subsequently progressed to a full-fledged separate hoax before turning into real-life music ensemble — consisting, as per the band's legend, of four Ball brothers.
