About

Avicii was the stage name of Tim Bergling, a Swedish DJ, record producer, and songwriter born in 1989 in Stockholm, who became one of the most successful and influential electronic dance music artists of the 2010s before his death in April 2018 at the age of 28. His fusion of progressive house, electro, and country-folk influences brought EDM to mainstream pop radio and helped define the sound of a generation of festival culture. Having begun producing music as a teenager and gaining early recognition through his SoundCloud uploads and Remixes, he rose rapidly through the EDM circuit and achieved his first major success with 'Levels' (2011) — a euphoric, piano-sample-driven progressive house track built on a vocal fragment from Etta James that became one of the decade's most recognisable Dance Anthems and a foundational text of the festival EDM era. *True* (2013), his Debut album, was a landmark in mainstream electronic music's crossover into pop: rather than pure club music, it incorporated country, folk, and rock influences with live musicians and singers, producing the massive global hit 'Wake Me Up' — featuring Aloe Blacc and a bluegrass-inflected production that reached number one in over twenty countries — and 'Hey Brother' and 'Addicted to You.' The album sold over three million copies and made Avicii one of the world's most commercially valuable DJs. *Stories* (2015) continued the hybrid approach, and *AVĪCI (01)* (2017) showed continued evolution. His retirement from touring in 2016, citing acute pancreatitis aggravated by the physical and psychological toll of the DJ circuit's relentless schedule, and his subsequent death were received with enormous grief by the global music community. The posthumous *TIM* (2019), completed from demos by his family and collaborators, was a moving final statement. Bergling's legacy includes substantial charitable work through the Tim Bergling Foundation focused on mental health and suicide prevention.
