Basement Jaxx

Basement Jaxx are a British electronic music duo from Brixton, south London, formed in the early 1990s by Felix Buxton and Simon Ratcliffe. Emerging from the London club scene, they developed a style that fused house, garage, funk, and pop into wildly exuberant and genre-defying records, becoming one of the most inventive and commercially successful acts in British electronic music. Their debut album Remedy (1999) arrived as a fully-formed declaration of intent — eclectic, sample-heavy, and crammed with hooks, it established the duo's approach of treating every genre as raw material while maintaining a joyful, danceable coherence. Rooty (2001) broadened the approach further, featuring the breakout singles Romeo and Where's Your Head At, both genuine pop hits that introduced the duo to a much wider audience. Rasslin' (2002) and Kish Kash (2003) demonstrated continued evolution, the latter featuring vocalists including JC Chasez and Dizzee Rascal across a record of striking eclecticism. The duo won two Mercury Prize awards during this period and received widespread critical recognition as one of the most important acts in British music. Subsequent records — The Singles (2005), Crazy Itch Radio (2006), Scars (2009), and Zephyr (2009) — maintained their commitment to ambitious, cross-genre production. Basement Jaxx continued touring and releasing music through the 2010s, their back catalogue remaining a touchstone for producers and DJs interested in the possibilities of electronic music as an inclusive, emotionally expressive form.
