Beach House

Beach House are a Dream Pop duo formed in Baltimore, Maryland in 2004 by vocalist and keyboardist Victoria Legrand and guitarist Alex Scally. One of the most consistently excellent and sonically distinctive acts in contemporary indie music, they have built a career of extraordinary consistency — eight albums over twenty years, each occupying their dreamy, reverb-saturated sonic world while finding new emotional and textural registers within it. Having developed their sound through Baltimore shows and early self-released recordings, they signed to Carpark Records and released debut *Beach House* (2006), establishing the template: Legrand's deep, slightly-too-large vocal, Scally's chiming guitar and organ, and a hazy, nocturnal atmosphere that evoked loss, desire, and the particular melancholy of places seen only at the edge of memory. *Devotion* (2008) and *Teen Dream* (2010, their Sub Pop debut) expanded their audience, the latter containing 'Zebra,' 'Silver Soul,' and 'Walk in the Park' — career highlights that demonstrated their ability to write songs of genuine melodic power within their distinctive atmospheric constraints. *Teen Dream* was widely named album of the year by numerous publications. *Bloom* (2012) was lush and maximalist within their vocabulary, and *Depression Cherry* (2015) and *Thank Your Lucky Stars* (2015, released six weeks later as a companion piece) showed a more stripped-back approach. *7* (2018) pushed their sound further from traditional song structures toward abstract soundscapes, and *Once Twice Melody* (2022) — a sprawling double album released in four chapters — was their most ambitious statement: 18 tracks across a range of tones and textures that constituted a genuine career retrospective in scope. Their influence on dream pop, shoegaze revival, and the hazy, reverb-drenched aesthetic that dominated indie music through the 2010s has been enormous.
