American jazz, pop and R&B vocalist.
Born December 6, 1929 in or around Winston-Salem, North Carolina, USA.
McLaurin was a petite (4' 9" tall) singer with a big voice. McLarin began singing in a church choir near Winston-Salem but got her music training in opera as a teenager in New York City. She took up voice training in 1945 under the direction of Edward Romera. Her mother steered her toward pop singing rather than opera. She was discovered by [a=Phil Rose (5)] in 1949 when singing in a Harlem night spot. He became her manager.
Her first release was with the Claude Hopkins Orchestra "Crying My Heart Out for You". She switched to the Derby label after that.
McLarin toured with the Ink Spots through Canada in 1952 and later worked with the Four Fellows, recording six sides with them on Glory.
