Birdy

Birdy is a British singer-songwriter born Jasmine Lucilla Elizabeth Jennifer van den Bogaerde in Lymington, Hampshire in 1996. She came to public attention in 2011 when her cover of Bon Iver's Skinny Love, recorded when she was fourteen, was released as a single and became a commercial hit in the UK and across Europe, her clear, unadorned soprano voice bringing an immediate emotional directness to the material. Birdy (2011), her self-titled debut album, was built largely on covers — of Bon Iver, The National, Bat for Lashes, and others — and demonstrated both the appeal of her voice and the limits of the format. Fire Within (2013) moved towards original songwriting, featuring collaborations with Ed Sheeran and a more polished production approach, and reached the top five in the UK. Beautiful Lies (2016) continued the evolution, incorporating more electronic production. Her songwriting became more personal and assured with Portrait (2021), widely regarded as her most fully-realised original work, exploring themes of identity, loss, and womanhood with a depth and maturity that went beyond her earlier career's more straightforward emotional expression. Birdy has been a consistent presence on the European pop charts while maintaining critical credibility, and has contributed to numerous film and television soundtracks.
