British pop singer (May 5, 1944 - March 22, 2008). Bastow, who was later nicknamed "Ginge," was born in Salisbury, Wiltshire, UK. His family relocated to Australia when he was four years old. As a teenager, Bastow sang in clubs, on the radio and on TV. In November 1966, he was singing at the coastal holiday resort "Surfers' Paradise," where he was discovered by The Shake Spears who were touring there. In need of a singer they took Bastow with them back to Belgium. He stayed with the group for a couple of months and recorded a handful of songs with them, but left the group in March 1967 in order to pursue a solo career. The Shake Spears backed him on his first solo release, "Poinciana," (under the alias The Hi-Five) which became a nation-wide hit in Belgium.
Bastow continued to release records under his mononymous stage name (nine 45s and two LPs) until 1970. He reportedly went back to Sydney and later returned to England. Little is known of his whereabouts or activities until his passing in 2008 in Eastbourne, East Sussex.
