About

Mexican-American gangster rap group, originating from South Central Los Angeles, California.

Discovered in 1993 by Eazy-E, the group originally consisted of rappers [a804402], [a2757352] and [a804401]. In 2006 TOKER invited Trouble, whom he met in prison, to join the group. In 2016 [a6290406] was added to the group. Originally, Eazy-E's intentions on signing the band to Ruthless Records was to create a Mexican-American version of N.W.A..

Toker was introduced to Eazy-E via [a4432523], who had heard a demo cassette. The cassette included the single "Gang Related". Eazy-E had hoped to break into Mexican-American rap in California, and as Brownside used "SUREÑO" (Southern California) slang in their lyrics, as well as album covers, they were a good fit. In 1994, they were signed to EAZY-E's Ruthless Records label and released [m208865]. They also recorded one [known] track with Eazy-E entitled "Eastside Drama" which was not released at the time.

Following Eazy-E's passing in 1995, Brownside left Ruthless Records. Their debut album was released in 1997, having been recorded at the G-Spot Studio in El Monte, California with Tony G. The release featured a Mexican-American version of Eazy-E's "Boyz n the Hood", called "Vatos N The Varrio"

The band's main image was not that they were 'Rappers Trying To Be Gangsters' but rather they were 'Gangsters Trying To Be Rappers'. Their greatest hardship came in 1997 when group member Danger was killed. As a result the band had to finish their 1997 debut LP without him.
