American writer on jazz

died 16 December 1970 in New York City.
Collaborated with Frederic Ramsey Jr. on scripts for radio programme series "Jazz in America" 1942-1943, on on the writing of "Jazzmen" (1939). He also wrote "The Jazz Record Book" (1942) with Ramsey and others, as well as many reviews, articles, and liner notes. Smith was a founder of the Institute of Jazz Studies.
