Christopher Yavelow (b. 1950) is an American composer and one of the leaders in the field of computer-assisted composition. He studied composition and music theory at Boston University (BM 1972, MM 1974), Boston University (MFA 1977), Boston University (1977–78), Boston University, and École Normale de Musique in Paris with Nadia Boulanger (1978–79).
As a music educator, Yavelow had been lecturing at Harvard (1975–77), the Paris-American Academy (1978–79), the University of Texas at Dallas (1983–84), and Claremont Graduate University (1988–93). Christopher also worked as a chairman of the Music Department at Schiller International University from 1979 to 1980. Since 2008, Yavelow teaches at the University of Maryland University College.
In the eighties, Chris Yavelow published many articles on computer music at Byte Magazine, Electronic Musician, Macromedia Journal, Macworld, New Media Magazine, and Boston University. From 1995 to 1999, Yavelow worked as an editor of A-R Editions' Computer Music and Digital Audio book series. The composer wrote and co-authored nearly a dozen books on music and multimedia arts. His debut 'Macworld Music and Sound Bible' won the Computer Press Association Award in 1992.
