American jazz bassist and occassional singer. Born October 25, 1918 in New York City, USA. Died October 1, 2003 in Rancho Bernardo, California, USA. Chubby played clarinet and bass as a teen. He played clarinet in his High School (in Freeport, New York) in 1935. In 1934 he had begun to play bass and then started playing professionally in 1936. with Mike Riley. He went on to play with swing orchestras Raymond Scott, Jan Savitt, Charlie Barnett and Woody Herman. he is famous for his use of the 5 string bass with the top string tuned to the middle C.
