Chuck Schuldiner

Charles “Chuck” Schuldiner was born on May 13, 1967, in Long Island, New York, to a Jewish family of Austrian heritage. The youngest of three children, he grew up alongside his older brother, Frank, and his sister, Beth.
Schuldiner became widely known as the vocalist, guitarist, composer, and principal songwriter of the influential metal band Death, as well as several other musical projects. Although he performed well in school, he often felt unchallenged and eventually left his formal education — a decision he later acknowledged as a mistake.
Inspired by heavy metal acts of the 1970s and 1980s, he began playing guitar at the age of nine. He also held a strong appreciation for jazz and classical music, influences that would become increasingly evident in the evolving sound of Death over the years.
In May 1999, Schuldiner was diagnosed with brain cancer. Despite significant support from fellow musicians, friends, and family, he ultimately succumbed to the illness. He passed away on December 13, 2001.
