Cold War Kids

Cold War Kids are an American indie Rock band formed in Long Beach, California in 2004, led by vocalist Nathan Willett and guitarist Jonnie Russell. Their early sound drew on gospel, blues, and post-punk — driven by Willett's ragged, soulful delivery and literary lyrics — before evolving into more polished indie pop territory over subsequent albums.

Robbers & Cowards (2006) was a striking debut, loose and emotionally raw, with Hospital Beds and We Used To Vacation standing as early classics of mid-2000s indie rock. Loyalty To Loyalty (2008) consolidated their following while Mine Is Yours (2011) marked a deliberate move toward mainstream rock production that divided their earlier Audience.

Hospitality (2013) and Hold My Home (2014) demonstrated an ongoing tension between their instinct for eccentricity and commercial ambition. L.A. Divine (2017) and New Age Norms 1, 2, and 3 (2019–2021) showed a band settled into a productive midcareer mode — consistently releasing without the explosive critical moment of their early work.

At their best, Cold War Kids shared the blues-inflected emotional directness of Spoon and Young the Giant — bands who understood that indie rock's strength lay in songs built around genuine feeling, not just texture or atmosphere.
