About

Crystal Castles were a Canadian electronic music project formed in Toronto in 2004, built around producer Ethan Kath and vocalist Alice Glass. One of the most distinctive and confrontational acts in the lo-fi electronic and witch-house-adjacent scenes of the late 2000s, they produced a body of work that fused distorted 8-bit and chiptune textures with abrasive noise, shoegaze atmospherics, and Glass's frantic, often wordless vocal performances into a uniquely unsettling sonic universe. Early singles circulated on blogs and MySpace before a self-titled debut on Different Recordings in 2008, which attracted immediate attention from the experimental electronic community. The album's abrasive, distorted sound — MIDI arpeggios run through guitar pedals, blown-out production aesthetics, Glass's screaming delivery — made it a touchstone of what critics variously called witch house, lo-fi electronic, or simply noise pop. 'Crimewave,' a collaboration with Health, was their most immediately accessible single. *Crystal Castles II* (2010) and *III* (2012) demonstrated a gradual darkening and sonic deepening, with the latter in particular embracing more industrial and dark electronic textures. Glass's live performances — physically punishing, deeply committed, often disturbing — became central to their reputation. Glass departed in 2014, subsequently making public allegations of abuse against Kath — allegations that were widely believed in the music community and significantly damaged Crystal Castles' legacy. Kath continued the project with a new vocalist, releasing *(III)* (2016) and *Amnesty (I)* (2016), though to considerably diminished reception. Glass's solo career under her own name and as PREY has continued the confrontational electronic aesthetic of the original project's best work. Crystal Castles' influence on underground electronic music, dark pop, and the visual aesthetics of experimental music of the 2010s has been considerable despite the ethical complications surrounding their history.
