Daft Punk

Daft Punk were a French electronic music duo formed in Paris in 1993 by Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo. Operating behind robotic helmets that concealed their identities and constructed elaborate science-fiction narratives around their personas, they created one of the most influential bodies of work in electronic music history, bringing house and disco into the mainstream while maintaining genuine artistic credibility across a three-decade career. Having met at school in Paris and briefly played in indie rock band Darlin' before turning to electronic music, they signed to Virgin Records and released debut album *Homework* (1997) — a collection of house, techno, and funk built from samples and synthesisers that produced the inescapable 'Around the World' and 'Da Funk.' The album sold over 3 million copies and established the project's identity. *Discovery* (2001) was their masterwork — a maximalist, filter-house record that processed disco and 1970s funk through digital compression into something simultaneously nostalgic and futuristic. 'One More Time,' 'Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger,' 'Aerodynamic,' and 'Digital Love' were each perfect in their own way, and the accompanying anime film *Interstella 5555*, directed by Leiji Matsumoto, gave the album a visual dimension of genuine artistic ambition. *Human After All* (2005) was more minimal and repetitive; *Alive 2007* — their live Coachella set recorded and released — was one of the greatest live electronic albums ever made. *Random Access Memories* (2013), a reaction against digital production that used live musicians including Nile Rodgers and Giorgio Moroder, produced the ubiquitous 'Get Lucky' (with Pharrell Williams) and won the Grammy for Album of the Year. The duo's surprise announcement of their split in February 2021, via a short film, ended a career that had influenced virtually every subsequent electronic artist. Their helmets, their mythology, and their refusal to grant interviews or appear out of character demonstrated that electronic music could support genuine artistic mystique.
