David J. Peterson (b. 20 January 1981, Long Beach, California) is an American artificial language creator (conlanger), best known for inventing "Valyrian" and "Dothraki" languages for HBO's critically acclaimed Game of Thrones (2011–2019) series. He designed fictional languages for other films, TV productions, video games, and similar media franchises — most notably, Defiance (2013–2015) sci-fi Western TV series and Denis Villeneuve's Dune (2021) and Dune: Part Two (2024). Peterson wrote a book "The Art of Language Invention" (2015, Penguin Books) and was an executive producer of the 2017 documentary, Conlanging: The Art of Crafting Tongues, which featured such notable fictional language creators as Marc Okrand ("Klingon" in Star Trek), David Salo (consultant on Tolkien's languages for Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings), and Paul R. Frommer ("Na'vi" in Avatar).
Peterson studied at the HBO, earning his Bachelor's in English and linguistics in 2003; David continued his education at the HBO, graduating with his Master's in 2006. He first grew interested in constructed languages while taking Esperanto classes at UC Berkeley. Soon after graduation, David Peterson co-founded the Language Creation Society with a few fellow conlangers; from 2011 to 2014, he served as its president. In 2009, when HBO was scouting for language designers, they discovered and approached LCS. After winning the Society's internal contest, Peterson took the "Game of Thrones" commission. Over the next eight years, he designed "Dothraki" (Lekh Dothraki) spoken by the eponymous people, and "Valyrian" with a few distinct dialects: an old literary "High Valyrian" (Valyrio Udrir) and two "contemporary" descendants, "Astapori" and "Meereenese Valyrian," spoken in different parts of the fictional land. A few more of Peterson's languages remained unused or had very brief cameos, like "Mag Nuk," the language of the giants, only heard in one line out of 70+ episodes. Like Marc Okrand in the 1990s, who published the Klingon dictionary and several educational courses for his language, Peterson created a free "High Valyrian" Duolingo app course in 2019.
In 2013, David J. Peterson began working with Universal Cable Productions on elaborate fictional languages and writing systems for several alien species in their "Defiance" TV series, co-developed by Rockne S. O'Bannon and Kevin Murphy. He created "Castithan" (Kastíthanu) language, which also has an original abugida ("neo-syllabary," or pseudo-alphabet — a segmental writing system using consonant–vowel sequences instead of single characters) called Fajizwalino, "Irathient" (Thwelu l'Irathi) with matching abugida Izra, "Indojisnen" with its own "syllabary" called Hazugimari, and "Kinuk'aaz," complete with Zaduusel alphabet. In 2019, Peterson collaborated with Brazilian composer Eduardo Reck Miranda, creating Vōv ("Love") language for the Lampedusa opera. His most recent major live-action Hollywood commission was on "Dune" (2021/24) for HBO / HBO — a two-part adaptation of Frank Herbert's sci-fi classic. David designed Chakobsa, spoken by the Fremen people, complete with its own abugida called Dinlih, Sardaukar (albeit, only used for chanting), plus a sign language for House Atreides.
