American jazz saxophonist, conductor and bandleader.
Born May 29, 1909 in Newark, New Jersey. Died September 18, 1980 in New Orleans, Louisiana. Married & divorced from singers Gracie Barrie & Trudy Stevens. Cousin of singer Dolly Dawn.
Dick played with the Ben Bernie Orchestra (1928-) and from 1935 with own his band (with vocalists such as Bunny Berigan, Paula Kelly, Burt Shaw and Gracie Barrie). He also worked with Dean Martin, Jimmy Dorsey and Vincent Lopez and Lee Castle.
In 1949 Stabile met Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis and soon became their musical director, remaining close friends with both men until the end of his life. Stabile first was at the helm of his orchestra for Martin singles in 1952-4 with songs that charted including "You Belong to Me", "That's Amore", "Money Burns a Hole in My Pocket", "Sway", and "Id' Cry Like a Baby". He and his orchestra were also with Martin on his Capitol albums Dean Martin Sings and Swingin' Down Yonder. The albums netted charted songs such as Martin's #1 hit in both the U.S. and the U.K. "Memories Are Made of This" in 1955. Stabile conducted on additional chart entries that year and 1956 with Martin including "Naughty Lady of Shady Lane", "Mambo Italiano", "Let Me Go Lover" "Under The Bridges Of Paris" and four others.
