Dieter Serfas

German drummer in the Krautrock era born in 1946 in Hof.
Born in Hof, he starts to play music with his schoolmate Christian Burchard. They move to Nürnberg in the 1960's, where they meet saxophonist Edgar Hofmann and together they form the Jazz trio "Contemporary Trio". They move to Munich around 1967 and Serfas and Burchard start to play with Jazz pianist Mal Waldron. In 1968, the three musicians form a band together with Lothar Meid, which in 1969 becomes Embryo. In this initial stage, Serfas meets Amon Düül II backstage during a festival in Essen. He joins the band instead of continuing with Embryo.
In 1971, he accepts an offer in his Frankonian homeland as editor of a local newspaper "Frankenpost", as he just raised a family and needed financial security.
However, he stays an important figure on the Krautrock scene, he is with Amon Düül and Amon Düül II in their early days, joined-in on the Eruption sessions, and plays on and off over the years with Embryo. As guest musivian in the 1970's and in the 1980's and 1990's as part of their lineup, including several tours around the world.
