About

DJ Audio$var is a project of Danish/Faroese experimental artist Kristian Vester (Goodiepal), which began as a series of audio comments to his Radical Computer Music theory and an accompanying "audio walkthrough" tape. In June 2009, Goodiepal started posting YouSendIt links with voice messages (2-10-min MP3s with an acoustic intro "jingle") in the comments section of the recent Geiger.DK magazine's article about his controversial expulsion from DIEM. (Geiger, a prominent Danish indie music publication, had thoroughly reported on Goodiepal's activities and hosted many heated discussions about the artist on its forum). Subsequently, DJ Audio_$vars evolved into professionally produced "mixtapes/podcasts" up to 3-5 hours in duration: previously unreleased albums, alternative mixes, Goodiepal's talks and festival performances. Some Audio$vars were intended for simultaneous playback with specific records. For instance, all three limited-edition "add-ons" to Gæoudji Sygnok's notorious Route 66 Eksperimentet album in March 2011 came with a URL to download corresponding DJ Audiosvars printed directly on LP center labels.

In May 2014, when the National Gallery of Denmark acquired Goodiepal's personal belongings as a permanent installation, he shared the first-ever aggregated Audio$var archive via public Wi-Fi network accessible to visitors. (Kristian Vester already explored a similar concept of "peer-to-peer" data sharing a few years prior. In November 2004, he purchased a full-page front cover ad in The Wire to distribute "Hacker Packs," massive nine-disc packages of unique content: music, videos, pirated software, and even a conspiracy theories library.)

Along with Audio_$vars, Goodiepal published several "Text_$var" documents and a collection of 160+ "snappidags:" photos, musical scores, handwritten notes in English and Danish, screenshots, Vester's postcards and documents, images of rare releases (Goodiepal's '91 debut solo [r=11615537] tape, for instance) and other quirky objects (such as a DIY sound device inside a hollow book, similar to Hugh Davies's SHOZYGs from the 1960s); even a scanned NatWest bank statement with a total cost breakdown for "Route 66 Eksperimentet." (Goodiepal explained some snappidags in his June 2012 episode of [a253437]'s A Day in the Mouth documentary.)

In October 2019, UbuWeb posted an online collection with over 100 Audio$vars. In August 2020, the "Podcast for Contemporary Art" by The Lake Radio/Museet For Samtidskunst dedicated a whole episode to Goodiepal's Audio$vars, presented by museum curator Magnus Kaslov.
