American popular comedic singer in late 1940s-1950s. Later became a character actress. Born April 11, 1921 in Jacksonville. Florida, USA. Died October 22, 1978 in Santa Monica, California, USA. As a singer, she was known as the "Park Avenue Hillbillie". She often sang story songs with a comedic tilt to them. In her singing engagements, she performed dressed as a sophisticated urbanite while talking like a rural Southerner--thus the title. She charted with "Feudin' and Fightin'" in 1947. It reached #4 on both the U.S. singles and the U.S. country singles charts. She was a regular on Spike Jones' radio show and appeared on TV on the Red Skeleton and Jack Benny shows in addition to her acting movies and TV shows.
