    Her career started in 1939, when she won a songwriting contest arranged by Casa Manana in Fort Worth, Texas, with her song "Dancing in the Moonlight." Her first professional song, "Lo and Behold," was written during World War II and published in London. Later she wrote songs such as "Guess Who I Saw Today," and "Thursday's Child." Her collaborators included Murray Grand and George Goehring.
