Ernest Carter, son of D.P. Carter, a founding member of the Chuck Wagon Gang Southern Gospel quartet. Ernest acquired his stage name "Jim" in 1936 when his family's quartet began appearing on the radio and changed their ensemble's name from Carter Quartet to Chuck Wagon Gang. Ernest "Jim" performed as part of that group from 1936 to 1953 and then again from 1968 to 1970.
