Flume

Flume is the project of Australian electronic producer Harley Edward Streten, born in Sydney in 1991. Emerging at the forefront of a wave of Australian electronic producers in the early 2010s, Flume developed a distinctive production signature — pitched-down vocal samples, intricate rhythmic programming, and lush melodic textures — that proved enormously influential on subsequent electronic music production worldwide. Flume (2012), his self-titled debut released when he was just 21, was a landmark in Australian electronic music — a Grammy-nominated album that produced the singles Holdin On and On Top, and introduced his production aesthetic to an international audience. It won the ARIA Album of the Year award, the highest honour in Australian music. Skins (2016), an EP of collaborations with vocalists including Beck, Vic Mensa, and Little Dragon, bridged the debut and his second full album. Skin (2016) won the Grammy Award for Best Dance/Electronic Album, confirming his standing as one of the most significant producers of his generation. The album's ambitious scope and emotional depth went well beyond the conventions of electronic pop production. Hi This Is Flume (2019), released as a mixtape, demonstrated his more experimental impulses, moving toward abstract sound design and club music. Palaces (2022) returned to more structured, collaborative songwriting. Flume's production style has been widely imitated across pop, R&B, and electronic music, and his influence on the sound of mid-2010s commercial music is substantial. He remains one of the most respected producers working in electronic music.
