Franz Ferdinand

Franz Ferdinand are a rock band formed in Glasgow, Scotland in 2002, comprising vocalist and guitarist Alex Kapranos, guitarist Nick McCarthy (later replaced by Julian Corrie and Dino Bardot), bassist Bob Hardy, and drummer Paul Thomson. One of the defining acts of the post-punk revival of the mid-2000s, they brought sharp art-school wit, angular dance-rock riffs, and an irresistible combination of intellectual cool and physical energy that made them one of the decade's most critically acclaimed and commercially successful guitar bands. Formed in part from Glasgow's vibrant art scene — the band rehearsed in a shared warehouse space and ran their own club nights — their debut single 'Darts of Pleasure' (2003) and self-titled debut album (2004) arrived with remarkable confidence. *Franz Ferdinand* was a lean, dynamic record built on interlocking guitar parts, stop-start rhythmic shifts borrowed from Gang of Four and Television, and Kapranos's laconic, literary vocal delivery. 'Take Me Out,' 'Michael,' 'Do You Want To,' and 'This Fire' were among the decade's most energetic guitar songs, and The Album won the Mercury Prize. *You Could Have It So Much Better* (2005) maintained the momentum with another set of tightly constructed dance-rock songs. *Tonight: Franz Ferdinand* (2009) leaned into disco and electronic influences, and *Right Thoughts, Right Words, Right Action* (2013) returned to the core guitar sound with renewed directness. *Always Ascending* (2018), recorded with production duo Sparks as part of the FFS supergroup side-project (which produced a celebrated 2015 collaborative album), incorporated synthesisers more fully and marked a sonic evolution. *The Human Fear* (2025) continued their creative development. Franz Ferdinand's art-school rigour, their insistence on making dance music for people who think and thinking music for people who dance, has influenced countless guitar bands and remains central to their appeal.
