American popular singer and vocal entertainer rooted in jazz.
Born August 17, 1919, Worcester, Massachusetts; died December 9, 2006 (age 87), New York City, New York.
She began singing at the age of 13, under the name Fredda Lipson, and joined the Hudson-DeLange Orchestra in 1936 (age 17), and toured with them for 10 months as Fredda Gibson.
She charted 25 times solo and once with a duet with Bob Crosby. Four of her recordings rose to the top 5: "Kiss of Fire," which hit #1 in 1952; "Dance with Me Henry (Wallflower)," which hit #1 in 1955; "Tweedlee Dee," which hit #2 in 1955; and "(If I Knew You Were Comin') I'd've Baked a Cake," which hit #5 in 1950.
She recorded periodically as Fredda Gibbons and Fredda Gibson, and changed her name to Georgia Gibbs in the early 1940s.
