Goghal, the alter ego of Nico Goethals, was born after a horrific accident. One dark and stormy night, Nico was heading back home. On his motorcycle. The rain poured down, making it unable to drive any further. Just after parking his bike on the breakdown lane he got hit by a speeding car. Touch and go. Nico lost his left lower leg. His body, deformed by a higher power. Nico Goethals has been making music since he was a kid. In his teens and twenties he sang and played guitar in several rock bands, but since that harsh wake up call, he decided to also devote his time to working out some of his own musical ideas. Armed with unabled instruments and a laptop he started to experiment with sound, resulting in a very personal, pure and unique sound. Goghal was born. Goghal is fascinated by the fact that every object – cf. his human body – can be deformed. A lump of clay, a house, a human, …but also non-concrete matter or things that are invisible to the naked eye, like sound. The only thing one needs is a powerful, external force. Goghal records these sounds, manipulates them and turns the nearly unnoticeable into a distorted sound that cannot be denied. Noise. To many people unattractive. To Goghal the answer to his quest for musical exploration.
