The "Großes Unterhaltungsorchester des Südwestfunks" was founded on 9th of May 1951, when the Funkorchester Kaiserslautern was merged with the Unterhaltungsorchester Koblenz. Later the orchestra was renamed to Rundfunkorchester Des Südwestfunks. The orchestra was located in Kaiserslautern, principal conductor from the start was Emmerich Smola.
