Gunnel Fagius

Swedish musicologist, music educator and musician with a focus on children and singing, born Törnqvist, born 26 May 1946 in Stockholm.

She is a trained music teacher at the Royal Academy of Music in Stockholm, has a cantor's degree and a phil. mag. in musicology. Since the 1970s, she has worked as a music teacher and choir director for several years, when she also had special music classes. She has also been active as a church musician in Uppsala Mission Church on occasions between 1982 and 2000[3] and has been a music consultant for the Church of Sweden at a national level. Fagius has a particular focus on choral music – including many years in the Uppsala Academic Chamber Choir – and children's singing.

Fagius has long claimed that children risk damaging their voices due to teachers' poor musical knowledge and incorrect voice positions when singing, which has made her an authority in the field in Sweden. Since 2001, she has been a research coordinator at Uppsala University's Choir Centre and has started projects such as "Save the Children's Voice" and "Children & Singing" with the Choir Centre, UNGiKÖR and Rikskonserter.

She is the editor and co-author of the books Children in the choir – ideas and methods for children's choir directors (1990), Children and singing – about the voice, the songs and the way there (2007) and Choir singing affects (2012) Among the contributing researchers and writers is her husband, neurologist Jan Fagius, who is also the brother of Hans Fagius.
