Born on November 28, 1892 in Atlantic City, New Jersey.
Died December 26, 1962 (age of 70) in Mount Carmel, Pennsylvania.

Carroll was classically trained on piano and violin as a child, He began his career playing piano in movie houses in Atlantic City and in Pittsburgh, while still in his teens.
As a songwriter, he charted twenty times between 1913 and 1920, all in the U.S., and an additional six times between 1946 and 1998 (3 in the U.K. between 1975 & 1998). In 1913 he had a #1 song with "The Trail of the Lonesome Pine" by Henry Burr & Albert Campbell (co-written by Ballard MacDonald) and in 1914 another #1 with "By the Beautiful Sea" by The Heidelberg Quintet (co-written by Harold Atteridge) and a third #1 in 1918 with "I'm Always Chasing Rainbows" by Charles Harrison. "Rainbows" melody was adapted from Fantaisie-Impromptu by Frédéric Chopin with lyrics added by Joseph McCarthy. The song is a popular standard, recorded by many artists over the years.
Carroll also composed for Broadway and produced some musicals as well.
Carroll is the only composer with two songs in the Songwriters Hall of Fame's list of the Top 100 popular songs.
