About

Hozier is the stage name of Andrew Hozier-Byrne, a singer, songwriter, and guitarist born in 1990 in Bray, County Wicklow, Ireland. One of the most distinctive voices to emerge in indie folk and soul-influenced pop in the 2010s, he combines a deep, ragged baritone, blues and gospel influences absorbed from American roots music, and lyricism steeped in religious imagery, Irish mythology, and romantic intensity. Having studied music at Trinity College Dublin and developed his craft playing live around Ireland, he released the EP *Take Me To Church* (2013) independently. The title track — a brooding, gospel-informed anthem using the metaphor of religious devotion to critique organised religion's treatment of LGBT people — went viral after its music video, featuring a gay couple persecuted by a mob, resonated with the context of Russia's anti-gay propaganda laws. It reached number two on the Billboard Hot 100 and became one of the decade's most-discussed songs. His self-titled debut album (2014) expanded on his blues, soul, and folk foundations with the careful literary craftsmanship evident in 'Someone New,' 'From Eden,' and 'Like Real People Do.' The album was a global success, reaching the top five in over a dozen countries. After a five-year gap during which he wrote and recorded extensively, *Wasteland, Baby!* (2019) debuted at number one in both the US and UK — a rare achievement for a predominantly folk-influenced act — and won the Grammy for Best Pop Solo Performance for 'Movement.' *Unreal Unearth* (2023), a double album loosely structured around Dante's *Inferno*, was his most ambitious work: a sprawling, musically rich exploration of love, grief, and environmental catastrophe that demonstrated his growth as a composer and producer. Hozier's commitment to political activism — speaking publicly on environmental issues, reproductive rights, and social justice — has given his music an ethical dimension that resonates strongly with his audience.
