American guitarist, keyboard player and songwriter, born December 26, 1966.

Co-founded Uncle Tupelo with Jeff Tweedy, but left in 1993 (causing the band to dissolve) to form Son Volt.
Following three albums with Son Volt Jay concentrated on his solo career, but in 2005 he reformed Son Volt with a new lineup.

He is the uncle of Jesse Farrar.
