Jean-Pierre Bertrand

Issu d’une famille travaillant dans le cinéma depuis trois générations, jean-pierre bertrand est formé au métier d’opérateur image. L’imaginaire propre au cinéma (film, caméra, processus argentiques, montage) infuse l’ensemble de sa démarche artistique. L’œuvre de jean-pierre bertrand prend sa source dans une approche arithmétique du temps et de la nature, la porosité des médiums. Dès la fin des années 1960, sa recherche du vivant s’exprime par le film et la vidéo, la peinture, la photographie, le dessin et l’imprégnation quasi-alchimique de papiers par des matières organiques (sel, citron, miel). Chacune de ses expositions est envisagée comme un « Work in Progress », une réélaboration continuelle de l’œuvre qui déploie une résonance physique du corps à l’espace. Son travail est considéré comme unique, développant un univers sensible qui ne s’apparente à « aucun mouvement, à aucune école encore en place ». Son parcours est marqué par des expositions de référence à l’ARC, au Centre Pompidou, à la Documenta de Kassel, au Musée d’Art Moderne de Paris, etc. Il représente la France à la 48e Biennale de Venise en 1999. En 2019, le Centre Pompidou lui consacre une seconde exposition, Diamon’D, à l’occasion de la donation de l’ensemble de sa production cinématographique et vidéo-graphique. Depuis lors son travail est régulièrement montré dans des expositions personnelles ou collectives. Ses œuvres sont présentes dans de nombreuses collections privées et publiques. Coming from a family that has worked in the film industry for three generations, Jean-Pierre Bertrand trained as a cinematographer. The unique imagery of cinema—film, cameras, analog processes, editing—permeates his entire artistic practice. Jean-Pierre Bertrand’s work draws its inspiration from an arithmetic approach to time and nature, and the porosity of media. Since the late 1960s, his exploration of the living has been expressed through film and video, painting, photography, drawing, and the quasi-alchemical impregnation of paper with organic materials (salt, lemon, honey). Each of his exhibitions is conceived as a “Work in Progress,” a continual reworking of the work that unfolds a physical resonance between the body and space. His work is considered unique, developing a sensitive universe that bears no resemblance to “any movement or school still in existence.” His career has been marked by landmark exhibitions at the ARC, the Centre Pompidou, Documenta in Kassel, the Musée d’Art Moderne de Paris, and elsewhere. He represented France at the 48th Venice Biennale in 1999. In 2019, the Centre Pompidou dedicated a second exhibition to him, Diamon’D, on the occasion of the donation of his entire film and video body of work. Since then, his work has been regularly featured in solo and group exhibitions. His works are included in numerous private and public collections.
