Swiss chansonnier, poet and lyricist born June 2, 1895 in Montreux and died March 26, 1982 in Vevey. Also known as Gilles or sometimes Jean Villard Gilles.
He lived in Paris, France before the war and returned to Switzerland where he opened a cabaret located on "Rue de la Paix" in Lausanne called "Le Coup De Soleil" (sunburn) opened on October 19, 1940 with Edith Burger. It was the crossroads of French-speaking and supporter of the French Resistance. During WW2, Jean villard was accused of being Germany's number one enemy of Germany in Switzerland, by the ambassador of the third Reich in Switzerland who asked the Federal Council in Bern to silence Jean Villard whose songs are clearly anti-Nazi.
