He played Fiddle, Banjo, Guitar, Bass and Mandolin. He started playing music at the age of six. He moved to Nashville in 1953 with Flatt & Scruggs then after a year in Alabama with Carl Saucerman, moved back to Nashville to play for Bill Monroe.
