About

John Mayer is a guitarist, vocalist, and songwriter born in 1977 in Bridgeport, Connecticut. One of the most technically accomplished guitarists working in popular music and a consistent critical and commercial presence across more than two decades, he has built a career navigating between mainstream pop-rock, blues, country, and acoustic singer-songwriter traditions while developing a reputation as one of his generation's most gifted improvisers. Dropping out of Berklee College of Music in Boston to pursue music in Atlanta, he built a following through relentless live performance before debut album *Room For Squares* (2001) and its singles 'No Such Thing' and 'Your Body Is a Wonderland' brought mainstream breakthrough. His blues influences were more apparent on *Heavier Things* (2003) and explicit on *Continuum* (2006), widely regarded as his finest record — a polished, deeply blues-rooted collection featuring the searing 'Gravity,' the social-commentary of 'Waiting on the World to Change,' and numerous demonstrations of his exceptional guitar technique. The John Mayer Trio recordings (with Steve Jordan and Pino Palladino) showcased his most unguarded blues playing, and the acoustic record *Battle Studies* (2009) delivered the massive hit 'Half of My Heart' (with Taylor Swift). *Born And Raised* (2012) and *Paradise Valley* (2013) marked a shift toward country and folk textures, with prominent pedal steel and a California pastoral mood. *The Search For Everything* (2017) returned to a broader pop-rock palette, and his prolific touring — including an extended stint playing guitar with the Grateful Dead offshoot Dead & Company — has expanded his audience across generations. Mayer's guitar playing, particularly his ability to blend Stevie Ray Vaughan's Texas blues with B.B. King's phrasing and a more contemporary melodic sensibility, has made him one of the most studied guitarists working in mainstream music.
