About

Kletka Red is a multinational band founded by guitarist and vocalist of Jewish origin Leonid Soybelman in Germany. Leonid Soybelman was born in Moldova (still in USSR), later lived in Tallinn, Estonia (still in USSR as well). His first band was Jewish/Russian/Estonian project Ne Zhdali (formed in 1987), playing freaky mix of klezmer, Russian urban folk and free form improves. In late 1990, Leonid Soibelman the groups spiritus ego, singer and guitarist decided to immigrate to Israel. Everyone thought that the bands story was finished. But the group carried on, balancing awkwardly between different countries. Soybelman, who did not find an acceptable musical environment in Israel, moved to Switzerland. Later he moved to Berlin, where he founded Kletka Red. Kletka Red the band also included the drummer from Japan's Ground Zero, Tony Buck, guitarist Andy Moor, of the Dutch rock band The Ex, and (later) newcomer Joe Williamson on bass. They play a unique mixture of a jerky fractured hybrid of hard piercing punk rock improvised noise with all sorts of East European traditional music (Klezmer , Rembetika, Russian folk etc.) plus a dose of dissonant avant flavors to top it. Kletka Red released their international debut, Hijacking, on John Zorn's Tzadik label in 1996. They have stunned and impressed audiences at various new music festivals, including 1997's Taktlos festival and Quebec's FIMAV in 1998.In 2000 Kletka Red released Hybrid CD. Later Soybelman left music, and band was disbanded.
