McAllister joined Los Angeles-based band The Runaways on bass in 1978, playing with the band until its breakup. After The Runaways, McAllister played bass and sang for The Orchids.
After The Orchids broke up, McAllister moved to Amsterdam. She lived there for a number of years before returning to her hometown in Oregon.
